What happens to your remaining membership when you cancel
By Nicky, founder · Last updated 20 July 2026
When you cancel a UK gym membership you usually stay a member until your notice period runs out, you keep access for that time, and you almost never get a refund for it. Most people simply stop going and the paid time vanishes. At gyms on GiftAPass you can gift that remaining time to a friend or release it for a local to claim instead.
How much notice do UK gyms need?
Between zero and three months depending on the gym, and your contract always wins over the typical terms below. No-contract chains end at your next billing date; premium clubs commonly want full calendar months of notice.
| Gym | Typical notice | What that means for paid time |
|---|---|---|
| PureGym | No contract; cancel before your next billing date | Access until the end of the month you have paid for |
| The Gym Group | Monthly rolling; cancel before billing | Access until the end of the paid month |
| David Lloyd | Commonly three full calendar months on standard terms | You pay and keep access for the full notice period |
| Virgin Active | Typically one month | One more paid month of access |
| Nuffield Health | Typically one month | One more paid month of access |
| Council and Better leisure | Typically around one month | One more paid month of access |

Do you get a refund for unused time?
Rarely. Standard terms treat membership fees as payment for availability, not attendance, so stopping going does not create a refund. The genuine exceptions are narrow: a 14-day cooling-off right on many online signups, and contract clauses for significant relocation or medical circumstances, usually needing evidence.
If a gym has materially changed what you bought, for example closing the facilities you joined for, you may have a stronger case under consumer law. That is a complaint route, not a standard refund.
What actually happens to your remaining weeks?
Nothing, and that is the problem. You stay on the door list until your notice runs out, most leavers never come back in, and the time they paid for expires quietly. Across the UK that adds up to a startling number, which we work through in how much unused gym memberships cost the UK.
Can you give your remaining membership to someone else?
Traditionally no: memberships are personal and non-transferable in nearly every standard contract. Gyms on GiftAPass flip that at the moment it matters. When you cancel, the gym's gifting page lets you send your remaining time to a named friend in about a minute, or release it anonymously for a local to claim. The friend gets a one-time claim link; nothing about your cancellation changes.
If your gym is not on GiftAPass, the practical route is your guest passes while your notice runs, and telling the gym their leavers could be gifting passes instead of ghosting. People near you are already queueing for passes in London and Leeds.
How do you cancel cleanly?
- Read the notice clause first, then cancel in the way the contract names, usually an online form or written notice, and keep the confirmation.
- Do not just cancel the direct debit at your bank unless you are on a genuine no-contract membership; elsewhere it creates arrears, not cancellation.
- Diary the end date. The time between notice and end date is yours: use it, gift it, or hand your guest passes out.
Questions people ask
Is cancelling the direct debit enough?
Only at genuine no-contract gyms like PureGym, where the direct debit is the membership. Anywhere with a notice period, cancelling the payment without giving notice creates a debt the gym can chase.
Can I freeze instead of cancelling?
Usually yes, for a small monthly fee, and it is worth it for injuries or short absences. Freezing protects your rate and start date; cancelling and rejoining often costs more.
Can a gym keep charging after I cancel?
Only through the end of your notice period. Charges after that are an error worth disputing in writing, and your bank can reverse direct debits taken in error under the Direct Debit Guarantee.
What if my gym is not on GiftAPass?
Your remaining time stays personal to you, so use it or share via guest passes. You can also point the gym at giftapass.com; gyms join because gifted passes turn their leavers into introductions.
